Back to Sexy

Johnny Depp/
Gerard Butler and Gina Gershon/
After years of men sporting short, easy-to-maintain hair, long hair is making a comeback – and none too soon, if you ask most women. Longer hair represents romance and a sexy attitude. It also tells a woman that a man cares enough about her to put a little extra time and effort into looking great and changing up his look to keep it interesting. And nothing gives a man that “Bad Boy” look that women find irresistible more than long hair and a bit of facial hair.

Tom Brady/
I say “short hair is for men, but long hair is for the women.” They like to run their fingers through a man’s hair, and long hair feels softer and more sensual.  I don’t think it’s any coincidence that a clean-cut Tom Brady grew his hair long after marrying Brazilian supermodel Giselle.

Bradley Cooper/
As you can see, long hair is happening on the silver screen, on the sports field, on the runway, and of course, on musicians. I am even seeing teenagers with long, almost Seventies-style hair.

Robert Pattinson/
Long hair offers you more options; you can add color or highlights, slick it back for formal events, create beach-y waves, change your part, and create different textures with products.

So, from teenagers to adults of all ages, the trend to longer hair for men is here again.

Ashton Kutcher/
We fell into a comfort zone with no-effort short hair, but now it’s time to place a little more emphasis on making an effort to have the kind of hair that drives women wild.

The Golden Standard at ‘The Golden Globe Awards’

January Jones/
Diana Agron/
Sunday night’s Golden Globe Awards will be remembered for host Ricky Gervais’ loved-it-or-hated it patter, some very distinct trends in the women’s gowns (blush-to-hot pink, emerald green, long sleeves), and a somewhat lackluster showing in the hair department.
Milla Jovovich/
Anne Hathaway/
However, one look has already borne requests of, “Can you do that with my hair?” That’s the retro/updated hairstyles with deep side-parted bangs and controlled waves that were some of the most gorgeous, classic and romantic styles of the night: January Jones, Diana Agron, Meghan Fox, Milla Jovovich, Naya Rivera, and Anne Hathaway.
Sandra Bullock/
Olivia Wilde/
We saw it all this year at the 2011 Golden Globe Awards, from heavy bangs paired with long hair on Sandra Bullock, to a soft fringe on Olivia Wilde
Michelle Williams/
Edie Falco/
Annette Benning/
From short and simple on Michelle Williams to short and tossed like Edie Falco – to short and well…”wow, that’s bold” by Annette Benning
Carrie Underwood/
We saw a simple updo on Julie Bowen, the classic French twist on Natalie Portman, and Carrie Underwood’s neat and ultra-smooth updo with a slight lift at the crown and sideswept bangs.
Julie Bowen/
Natalie Portman/
Haircolor made strong statement from pale platinum (Michelle Williams and Emma Stone) to tones of soft golden honey (Claire Danes, Diana Agron, Heidi Klum), and the range of rich browns from Jennifer Lopez’ deep honey brown locks to Anne Hathaway’s mocha-with copper-highlights to the deepest espresso on Kim Kardashian, Meghan Fox and Camilla Belle
Helena Bonham Cater/
Perhaps the strongest color statement came from the ever-unpredictable, always eye-catching muse of Vivienne Westwood and Tim Burton, his wife Helena Bonham Carter. Her hair was a lovely shade of Merlot.
We all want to see a bit of the Golden Globes in ourselves, arriving at an event with the perfect hairstyle and makeup, the right outfit and the sexiest shoes. Those moments can turn anyone into a movie star, if just for an evening, and we’re here to help you feel like the star that you are.

The People We Loved at 'The People’s Choice Awards'

Last week’s People’s Choice Awards show heralded the beginning of the 2011 award season, which we all know culminates in that golden object of desire, The Oscars. I am an avid watcher of all the award shows, because within days of each show, someone always comes to my salon asking for a style or cut like the one they saw the evening before.
What I saw at The People’s Choice Awards were two extremes: up-dos, and long flowing tresses. From the severely sophisticated up-do of Queen Latifah and Kaley Cuoco to the looser, more lived-in up-do of Natalie Portman, Ashley Tisdale, Nikkie Taylor and Taylor Swift, they looked amazing.
Long, sexy hair won the day though, with Selena Gomez, Vanessa Williams, Jennifer Anniston, Cat Deely and Kristin Stewart all tossing about shiny, loose waves.
Here are my five favorite looks from this year’s People’s Choice Awards:
Khloe Kardashian/
Khloe Kardashian
The big fashion statement of the night!  I love red hair!  It's sexy and exciting.  Khloe looks great with red hair, and the shade compliments her complexion beautifully.  She could also go darker red and look even more dramatic.  No one will have trouble distinguishing her from her sisters now.
Khourtney Kardashian/

This side-swept long hair style is soft and sexy and so reminiscent of old Hollywood glamour.  Definitely a Red Carpet look. I love the rich chocolate color and the fact that her hair is lush and shiny, and in great condition.
Kim Kardashian/
Kim Kardashian
Kim is always beautiful and polished from head to toe. Her hair is always perfectly coiffed and classically styled, like this chic up-do. Her fashion sense and confidence are apparent; she knows what looks great and is never tempted to experiment with fads that so often land other celebrities with no fashion sense on the Fashion Police Repeat Offender list.
Selena Gomez/
 Selena Gomez
It's great to see that so many members of young Hollywood are displaying style, grace, and fashion sense beyond their years.  Selena Gomez' hair is soft, romantic, and timeless. The style compliments the slim silhouette and softness of her two gowns.

 Mila Kunis
This is straight hair as it should be -- precisely cut, mirror shiny, swingy, and in great condition. While so many of the styles at the People's Choice Awards were long and messy or up and messy, Mila really stood out by being perfectly coiffed. With bangs (see my last blog post!), this style would be even hotter and more dramatic.
So, I await the clients who will come in this week asking for Kim’s up-do or Khloe’s new red shade. Assolutamente belle!

What About (the) Bob?

Katie Holmes/
Gwyneth Paltrow/
This week we talk about another haircut that never seems to go out of style; it simply evolves – the Bob. We’re talking about a hairstyle that had its beginnings in the 1920s Prohibition Era, when women threw off the chains of highly elaborate long coifs that they were required to then pin up for propriety. The bob represented women dictating how they would wear their hair, rather than bowing to male-dominated ideals of femininity. At the time, bobbing one’s hair was practically a scandal!
Dame Helen Mirren,
Ellen Barkin/
Today, the bob is a highly feminine look that can be customized to virtually every face shape and hair texture. In the last year, a veritable bevy of A-List Hollywood celebs wore a bob: Charlize Theron, Ellen Barkin, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ashley Olsen, Dame Helen Mirren, Iman, Jada Pinkett, January Jones, Kirsten Dunst, Scarlett Johanssen, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Patricia Arquette, Renee Zellweger, Katie Holmes and most recently, Jessica Alba.
Jessica Alba/
Renee Zellweger/
Jennie Garth/
Each bob is unique, and highlights that celebrity’s features with variations like a chiseled edge to accentuate cheekbones or a bit longer to soften a strong jaw, a fringe of bangs to bring out the eyes, or an almost-shoulder-grazing bob that accentuates a swan-like neck. Bobs are versatile and easy to maintain, and allow you to try out many looks by cutting variations over time.
Scarlett Johanssen/
Bobs can be sharp and architectural like those of Katie Holmes, Rene Zellweger, Jessica Alba, and Gwyneth Paltrow; softer and wispy with some layering like those of Iman, Jennie Garth, Helen Mirren and Ellen Barkin, and even asymmetrical and punky like Scarlett Johanssen. I will consult with you on the right bob for your face shape, hair texture, and how much time you will devote to styling and maintaining the look, then create a unique bob especially for you.
And like bangs, a bob grows out quickly, and can be transitioned into longer or shorter styles very easily when you decide to undergo another fashion metamorphosis.
